The Camino de Santiago – was one of the most important pilgrimages in the Middle Ages, along with the Roman, and Jerusalem pilgrimages. In English it is known as the “Way of Saint James.” It is a system of pilgrimages that spread across Europe leading to the remains of the apostle Saint James the Greater, which is housed in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims would walk thousands of miles on the Camino to receive a plenary indulgence for the forgiveness of their sins. Today the Camino de Santiago attracts over 250,000 pilgrims a year.
